Christopher James - September 5, 2003
I have combined these two disgraced ex-Jays, as they will be forever linked in the hearts of all Toronto fans. Both were highly effective pitchers for Toronto, both left amidst controversy, and both have disrespected Toronto fans since. One, in fact, was actually traded for the other, and both now play for the same team. Can you guess the two ingrates to whom I am referring? Very Good. None other than the Degenerating Duo, David Wells and Roger Clemens. Lets look at the stats, Clemens first, as he holds the frame for July.
Clemens had a decent June, pulling in a 2.79 era, a .183 opp avg, walking 9 and striking out 43. This dominance ended in July, as Clemens' era ballooned to 5.17, his strikeouts dropped to 25, and his opponents batted .279 against him. This is understandable though. It is a proven fact that the human body, as it reaches it's sixties, does tends to break down some.
Now onto David Wells, and August. August was particularly ugly for Wells, who has a career full of ugly moments. Not only did he pitch TERRIBLY, he also, in what may be his final season (and certainly his final season with the Yankees) was involved in an ugly press battle with long-time pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre, who publicly questioned Wells' preparation and work ethic. Wells was outraged. Lets turn to the August numbers:
8.87 era, 0 wins, an average of 5.5 innings per start, 7 walks, 11 strikeouts, and an un-godly .357 opp. avg.
Man, that Stottlemyre doesn't know what he's talking about, eh Wellsie? Have another pork chop.
So yes, there you have it, two of the greatest heels in Ex-Blue Jay history finally take their place in the frame of shame. Have a nice retirement fellas, don't let the door hit you...
