Sean Doyle - December 5, 2003
Bill Singer was the Blue Jays opening day starter in their first season. His performance was forgettable that year (2-8, 6.79 ERA in 13 starts), and it marked the end of his playing career. Like so many pitchers, injuries cut his career short. His career as an assistant to Mets GM Jim Duquette, however was cut short in a far more imaginative way.
At a General Manager's meeting in November Singer approached Dodger's assistant GM Kim Ng in the lobby of a hotel. Singer was suffering from the combined effects of alcohol and the ever-perilous low-carb diet, which confused him to the point that when he meant to say: "Hello Ms Ng, its nice to meet you," it came out like this:
Singer: "What are you doing here?"
Ng: "I'm working."
Singer: "What are you doing here?"
Ng: "I'm working. I'm the Dodger assistant general manager."
Singer: "Where are you from?"
Ng: "I was born in Indiana and grew up in New York."
Singer: "Where are you from?"
Ng: "My family's from China."
Singer (Nonsensical mock Chinese, then): "What country in China?"
On behalf of people of Chinese heritage around the world: (Sound of hand slapping forehead).
To his credit, Singer apologized to Ng, the Dodgers, the Mets, and Planet Earth as a whole, but the Mets quite sensibly announced his firing on November 18. For ruining his front-office career after 12 days, and for engaging in behaviour that would embarass a six-year old, Bill Singer is your disgraced Former Blue Jay of this month.
